The Department of Economics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Bangladesh was founded in 1986 as one of the university’s first three academic departments and officially began its academic work on February 13, 1991. Since its inception, the department has shown a strong dedication to academic excellence through high-quality teaching, rigorous training in economic theory and empirical analysis, and policy-oriented research that benefits both national development and international scholarship.

The department offers a wide range of both undergraduate and graduate programs, including BSS, MSS, MPhil/MRes, and PhD degrees. These programs aim to develop graduates with strong analytical skills, quantitative abilities, and practical problem-solving capabilities. All academic programs are designed according to the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework and are regularly reviewed to ensure they meet both national and international academic standards. The curriculum adheres to guidelines from the University Grants Commission, the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, and the Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework, featuring clear learning outcomes, suitable assessment methods, and systematic quality assurance processes. Graduates are well equipped for employment in the private sector, public service, and development agencies, as well as for admission to competitive graduate programs at internationally recognized universities.

The Master’s program in Economics offers three distinct academic pathways, namely Master’s by Coursework, Master’s by Mixed Mode with thesis options, and Master’s by Research. The MSS in Economics provides advanced training in empirical methods and key fields, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial economics, development economics, labor economics, health economics, public policy, information economics, and econometrics. The program places particular emphasis on modern quantitative techniques, including panel data and time series analysis, consistent with international best practice. The MPhil, MRes, and PhD programs provide structured and research-intensive training in economic theory and applied methods, enabling students to undertake independent and original research under close academic supervision and complete dissertations that meet international scholarly standards.

The department fosters an active and expanding research environment supported by funding from both national and international government and non-government agencies. Faculty members have successfully obtained competitive research grants from organizations such as the World Bank, UNHCR, NFPCSP (FAO), UGC, HEAT ATF, BIAM, and NAPD. Research outputs from the department are regularly published in high-impact, peer-reviewed international journals indexed in ABDC A*, ABS 4, and Scopus Q1, including World Development, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Policy Modeling, Global Environmental Change, Journal of Development Studies, Journal of Developing Areas, Social Development Issues, Empirical Economics, International Review of Financial Analysis, Transport Policy, and the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, among others. These publications illustrate the department’s growing international research visibility and its contributions to the global academic discourse.

Faculty members actively participate in international scholarly engagement through research collaboration, conference presentations, and invited seminars at universities and policy institutions both nationally and internationally. The department organizes regular academic seminar series in applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and public policy, which serve as an important mechanism for research dissemination, peer feedback, and intellectual exchange among faculty members, students, and visiting scholars.

The department is committed to inclusive, participatory, and gender sensitive governance and adheres to high standards of teaching quality, research integrity, and academic ethics. Faculty performance and research contributions are recognized through university-wide awards and incentives. The department maintains transparent records of research output and scholarly impact through internationally recognized platforms such as RePEc, Scopus, and Google Scholar.

In line with its strategic objectives, the Department of Economics at SUST is actively pursuing initiatives to strengthen international academic collaboration, enhance research impact, and improve global subject rankings through curriculum benchmarking, faculty development, and increased research visibility.
