SUST invents cancer detecting technology

A team of researchers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has invented a low cost technology to diagnose cancer in just five minutes by analysing blood sample. The research team of 25 members, which consisted of five teachers and the remaining were undergraduate, graduate and PhD students of Physics department. Diagnosis of cancer using the nonlinear optics is for the first time ever in the world, said Prof Yasmeen who led the research team.

The technology enabled device will be ready within a year, the information was disclosed at a press conference on Wednesday organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Education Ministry at International Mother Language Institute at Segunbagicha in the capital.

The research team and the university administration have applied for the patent rights in the U.S. and Bangladesh for the technology "Method and System Based Nonlinear Optical Characteristic of Body Fluid for Diagnosis on Neoplasia".

Addressing as the chief guest, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “Today is a historic day for Bangladesh marking the epoch making invention.” He said the education ministry spent Tk 2,054 crore under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) to improve the higher education in the country. About the invention of cancer detecting technology, Nahid said, “It is a new invention. This is a remarkable achievement of Bangladesh in the field of education and research. This technology will be used for the benefit of all the people.”

UGC chairman Prof Abdul Mannan, SUST vice-chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed and World Bank chief operation officer Dr Muklesur Rahman, among others, addressed the press briefing.
