The Department of
Petroleum and Mining Engineering (PME) at Shahjalal University of Science and
Technology (SUST) was established in 2004, and academic activities commenced on
July 1, 2005, with the launch of the first undergraduate program in Petroleum and
Mining Engineering in Bangladesh. The department awarded its first B.Sc.
(Engineering) degree in 2010. Since then, eleven batches have graduated, and in
2018, the department introduced its Master’s program in Petroleum Engineering.
Graduates from the PME
department have made significant contributions both in Bangladesh and
internationally. Many have established successful careers in the oil, gas, and
mining sectors, while others have excelled in research, science, and technology
across the globe. In addition, a notable number of graduates are serving in
prestigious roles in academia, working as university professors, researchers,
and professional engineers. Their contributions extend beyond technical
expertise to include leadership in professional organizations, underscoring
their holistic development during their time at the department.
Throughout their
academic journey, PME graduates have been actively involved in various student
organizations, enhancing their leadership, managerial, and interpersonal
skills. This involvement—whether through academic, co-curricular, or
extra-curricular activities—has nurtured a strong sense of community and
belonging, preparing them for dynamic and successful careers.
To further strengthen
ties among alumni and achieve specific objectives outlined in its constitution,
the PME Alumni Association was established on January 1, 2020. Although still a
relatively new organization, the association has been actively contributing to
the development of the department, its graduates, and current students. This
platform serves as a testament to the ambition, unity, and collective
achievements of PME alumni, creating a lasting digital footprint for future
generations to build upon.
