Biography

Professor Tahmina Islam has been serving as a faculty member of Social Work, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh since 2001, She completed her Undergraduate and Graduate in Social Work from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet.She obtained another master degree from Goteborg University Sweden 2008. Her major research interests are Gender, gender inequality and empowerment, counseling and guidance, family violence, violence against women, couple conflict, acid violence, Indigenous community. She plays social activist role in various organizations. She runs a voluntarily counseling center in the department since 2009.She conducts a number of training on basic counseling in different GO and NGO organizations . She participates in different schools and colleges as a motivational speaker. She is an enlisted resource person in Police service where she delivers lecture on ethical norms values on Sylhet since 2016.

Teaching

  • I have been working in SUST for last 22 years. As a teacher I have been teaching various courses like Community Health Care, Physiological Aspects of Human growth & development, Social group work, Social Welfare Policy & Planning, Industrial Relations. Social welfare services in Bangladesh and Guidance & Counseling in Social Work: Theories & Techniques etc. Besides this, I have to conduct and supervise students in Fieldwork and Research project. Furthermore, it’s one of my major responsibilities to conduct seminar on various developmental issues like health problem, Acid violence, dowry problem, counseling, eve-teasing and different developmental issues etc.
