Biography

Captain (BTFO) Dr. Md. Ashraful Karim, Professor and former Head the department of Bangla of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is a poet, play wright and researcher of folk culture. Mobile No. 01711327836

Birth: He was born in 1972, in the village of Deogaon under Madhappur Upazila in the Dictrict of Habiganj. His father was late Md. Abdul Hafiz and his mother is Jahura Khanam. He had his early education from Talibpur Ahsania high school, and then he studied at Cumilla Victoria Govt. College and Jahangirnagar University. He did his Ph.D from Jahangirnagar University and the title of his thesis was ‘The Culture and Plays Performed by the Almost Extinct Ethnic workers: A Field Work Evaluation’ and his supervisor was Prof. Dr. Afsar Ahmed. The subject matter of his thesis was new and an extra-ordinary original research work. Nobody in the past carried out any research on this topic. He is the first who conducted an extensive research on the contribution of the ethnic people living in the tea gardens of greater Sylhet to Liberation War, their socio-economic condition, culture, language, dance-drama, music etc. The number of his research articles is about 42. In the meantime, his research articles have been published in the journals of Bangla Academy Research Journal, Dhaka, Dhaka University Linguistics Journal, Folklore Journal of Rajshahi University, Bangla Gobeshona Patrika, Islamic University, Kushtia, Shilpakala Half-yearly Bangla & English Journal of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka, SUST studies & SUST Journal of Social Sciences of Shahajalal University, Bhasha -shahitya Path, a research Journal of Bangla Department, SUST, Bengli Department Journal of Assam University, India, Loukik of Kolkata, EBONG MAHUA, UGC-CARE Approved listed Peer-Review Journal, Kolkata, India, Lokoswar (A Peer Reviewed Research Journal), West Bengal, India, Annual Review of ethnic Affairs (ECDO, Bangladesh) and the refereed Journals of home and abroad.
He has earned fame in fundamental research side by side teaching. He is well-known as a root searching researcher and a cultural personality. He is expert in pantomime, art of magic and acting along side academic teaching. He carried out research on Sylheti Nagri inscriptions, Deshowali dialect of tea labourers of Sylhet and Lalong dialect of ethnic community of Sylhet.
He has also evinced his expertise in research of folk culture. He acted as the main coordinator of flourish of Bangladesh folk culture program of the district of Sunamganj sponsored by Bangla Academy and the book regarding this has already been published (2014) by Bangla Academy.
The fields of his research are language, mass media, films & drama, ethnic community, subaltern studies, folk culture etc. He is the founder executive Editor/ Editor/ Advisor of Bhasha Shahitya Path, the research journal of Bangla Department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and the founder editor of KalerDhani (Sounds of Time), a quarterly magazine for the flourish of merit of the university students. Besides, he is the founder of Sangsaptak Natya Paribar (Undaunted troops family of the drama organization of SUST).
 It is mentioned that he presented a paper on ‘The Influence of Globalization in Folk Culture of The Tea Workers of Greater Sylhet’ in an international seminar under the heading of ‘Globalization and Folk Culture: Crises and Possibilities’ held in Asam University, Shilchar, India on 29-30 March, 2012
 In the same university he also presented a paper on ‘Dalit Humanity in the Poems of Shamsur Rahman: The Context of Freedom Fighting’ in an international seminar under the heading of Social Exclusion and Discrimination in India: Some Reflections in Comparative Context held in 10-11 March, 2014.
 He achieved renown in directing an international seminar on ‘Bangalee Mendicant Life in Bangla Literature’ as the Chairperson of the session and also participated in an international seminarby presenting an article on ‘Mendicant Life in Literature of Bangladesh’ held in Bir Bikram Memorial College, Agartala, Tripura, India, as the main speaker on 19-20 August, 2017.
He is a teacher, writer, social worker, cultured personality and a successful actor at the same time. His advent took place on the stage through acting in the drama called Ferari Nishan (The Flag got back) written by Mannan Heera when he was a student of Cumilla Victoria Govt. College. He earned reputation through acting in a number of plays and as an active actor in folk theatre during his university life. He participated in many workshops on plays. He is well-known as a mime artist. He was the student of first batch of ‘John Mime and Pantomime Academy’ for having higher training in mime acting. He earned fame as a magician on the campus and held solo magic exhibition on the stage of the Jahangirnagar university campus, in the Kochikachar Milonayoton (Auditorium for small children). Some special features highlighting him as a talented magician were published in some national dailies.
He was an expert athlete of the university. During his study at the college and university, he cultivated some virtues in his nature like self-confidence, discipline, dutifulness, perseverance etc. As he was the active member of Rover Scout and BNCC as well. He started his writing during his student life. A good number of poems, songs, plays, research articles and novels have been written by him and a number of his poems have been published in various newspapers.
In 2000, he completed the basic course of ‘Rover Unit Leader’ and established a rover unit. In 2002, he completed ‘Pre-commissioned Training’ from Bangladesh Military Academy, Bhatiary, Chittagong. As a result, he was commissioned as Second lieutenant by the Bangladesh Defense Ministry in 2005. Afterwards, he became lieutenant in 2008 and was promoted to the position of captain in 2016.
 It is mentioned here that he made a state visit to Nepal on the occasion of ‘Nepalese Army Day-2019’ at the invitation of The Defense Ministry of Nepal from 24 February to 7 March in 2019.
In 2004, he joined the department of Bangla as a lecturer in SUST. Now, he is the Professor and Head of the Department. It is mentioned that he is the founder of university BNCC as platoon commander. He is connected with many socio-cultural organizations. He is married and the father of a daughter and a son.
The published books written by him: A book of poems titled Lal Sobuj Potaka (Red Green Flag, 2010), Editor of Bishad Shindhu (The Ocean of Sorrows, 2010) by Mir Mosharraf Hossain, a play called Jilapi (A kind of sweetmeat in folds, 2012), Nil Akashe Kalo Megh (Dark Cloud in The Blue Sky, 2015) and a research book called Vashar Nana Rup (Various Colours of Language, 2014), Bangla Academy, Bangladesher Lokojsangskritir Granthamala Sunamganj (The Books of Sunamganj Folk-culture of Bangladesh, 2014), Khudro Nrigoshti-Mir Mosharraf-Kaikobad Ebong (2021).
He carried out his responsibility as the chief project coordinator of collecting different information of folk-culture of Sunamganj and preparing manuscript under the purview of Bangla Academy Research Project ‘The Flourish of Folk-Culture Program (2010-2011) and the manuscript titled ‘The Books of Sunamganj Folk-culture of Bangladesh’ was subsequently published in the form of a book by Bangla Academy.
He carried out his responsibility as the chief investigator of the research work ‘Majar Sangskritir Artho-samajik Provab: Sylhet vittik Shomikkha’ (The Socio-Economic effect of Shrine Culture : Study on Sylhet. Influence of Grave Culture; Sylhet-based observation) under the research project of 2016-2017 fiscal year of the SUST research centre sponsored by Bangladesh Grants Commission and submitted the final report.
He carried out his responsibility as the chief investigator of the research work ÒÔDeshoaliÕ dialect of tea workers : Linguistic and Language State ObservationÓ under the research project of 2021-2022 fiscal year of the SUST research Centre sponsored by Bangladesh Grants Commission.
He successfully performed the duties of observing Annual Sports Competition, several competitions of inter-university, Convocation-2007 & Convocation-2020, International Mother Language Day and Martyrs Day, Intellectual Martyrs Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, National Mourning Day, Admission Test, Bangla New Year held in SUST.

He achieved renown in directing an international seminar on ‘Bangalee Mendicant Life in Bangla Literature’as the Chairperson of the session and also participated in an international seminarby presenting an article on ‘Mendicant Life in Literature of Bangladesh’ held in Bir Bikram Memorial College, Agartala, Tripura, India, as the main speakeron 19-20 August, 2017.
