Biography

Dr. Sabina Islam is currently working as Professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, Bangladesh. She obtained both the degrees B.Sc. honours and M.Sc. in Statistics from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. She obtained her Ph.D in Statistics from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Uttar Pradesh, India. She was a post-doctoral fellow at Southampton University, Southampton, UK. She received Commonwealth staff fellowship for pursuing Post-doctoral research. Her main area of interest related to Statistical Demography and Geography. Her area of expertise includes model building and analysis of critical aspects of population studies such as fertility, mortality, migration, women empowerment, population growth and their related areas. She also done some works on Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) change, Riverbank Erosion Using RS (Remote Sensing) and GIS (Geographic Information System) Approach, Flood vulnerability and Resilience, Climate Change, Natural Hazards, Vulnerability Assessment etc.
Dr. Islam was a faculty in the Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT) at University of Dhaka (DU). She held the position as Head of the department of Statistics and successfully completed the tenure of three years. She also held the position as Dean, School of Physical Sciences at SUST and successfully completed the tenure of two years. She also served Department of Geography and Environment as a Head for about two years. She was appointed as a Provost of 1st Ladies Hall for three years and led the hall administration skillfully. She also held the highest administrative position as a Syndicate member for two times (tenure of three years each) and contributed there a lot for policy making and overall goodwill of the University.
She has a good number of publications in home and abroad journals contributed as author/co-author.

B. Worked as supervisor of the project “A Comprehensive Study on the Causes and Consequences of Rural-Urban Migration in Bangladesh - What Should be the Next Step and Strategy” sponsored by SSRC, Planning Commission from 2010 to 2011. C. Risk factors for Turning Pneumonia to Severe Pneumonia among children between two months to five years of age, an unpublished Research paper sponsored by ICDDR’B
