Biography
Professor Dr Engineer Mohammod Aktarul Islam Chowdhury is the Senior-most Faculty Member of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, Bangladesh. He is the Convener of the National Scientific Body of the Tanguar Haor formed by the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in 2013 for the effective management and sustainable development of Tanguar Haor through the assessment of environmental and natural situation of the haor. He is the Focal Point and the Coordinator of linkage Program between Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management of the People Republic of Bangladesh-Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP) for knowledge and Resource Sharing on Disaster Management Issues since November 2008. He is also the Member of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of CDMP since 2008. He was the DEAN of the School of Applied Sciences and Technology of SUST, Sylhet from December 03’ 2011 to December 02’ 2013. He was also the HEAD of the CEE department of SUST for about twelve years vis-à-vis from April 24’ 1996 to November 1998 (foundation state of CEE department), from June 2003 to July 2005, from August 2005 to August 2008, and June 04’2009 to June 03’2012. He was the Member, Distribution Division (Operation and Maintenance Committee) of International Water Supply Association (IWSA) since September 1995 and the Member of the Task Force for Unaccounted for Water of International Water Supply Association (IWSA) for the session 1996-1997. He is the life member of the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh. He is also the member of American Society of civil Engineers and American Water Works Institute and American Concrete Institute. He is the author of the text book “Municipal Solid Waste Management” ISBN: 978-984- 8910-14-5 published by University Grant Commission UGC of Bangladesh, Dhaka in May 2013 (624 pages of A4 sizes). He is also the Co-author of “Development Studies” published by Atlantic Publishers Ltd., Calcutta, India in 2007. More than 150 technical research articles authorized by him were published in International Journals (65 in Journals) and the proceedings of International Seminars and Conferences (86 in conferece proceedings) as well as around 100 articles on science, technology, rural economy and education system of Bangladesh in Bangla and English Language in national dailies and weeklies of Bangladesh. He was awarded one time monetary grant and certificate by the Ministry of Education of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh for published articles in 1988 when he was the final year student of B. Sc Engineering in civil engineering department of BUET
