Lecturer
Faisal Sobhan is a dedicated marine scientist and Lecturer at the Department of Oceanography, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, Bangladesh. With a strong academic foundation in marine science and oceanography, Faisal’s work focuses on marine ecology, pollution, hydrography, estuarine dynamics, and the sustainable blue economy. His research aims to better understand marine ecosystems and develop practical, science-based solutions for ocean conservation.
He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) and M.S. in Oceanography from the University of Chittagong. His master's thesis explored microplastic ingestion by pelagic fish in the northern Bay of Bengal, a topic that continues to shape much of his current research. Faisal has authored several peer-reviewed publications on microplastic pollution, marine biodiversity, and sustainable seaweed farming, including in high-impact journals such as Science of the Total Environment, Marine Pollution Bulletin, Marine Policy and Water, Air and Soil Pollution.
At SUST, Faisal teaches a wide array of graduate-level courses, including Marine Ecology, Marine Pollution, Hydrography, and Estuarine Dynamics. He is currently leading a university-funded research project on microplastics in Acetes shrimps along the northeastern Bay of Bengal, alongside investigating trophic transfer and pollution indices related to human health risks.
Previously, Mr Sobhan served as an Environmental Specialist on projects assessing biodiversity and aquatic systems for environmental impact assessments and collaborated with the FAO and IMSF on the seaweed value chain in Bangladesh.
In addition to his academic and research roles, Faisal is skilled in a variety of laboratory and field techniques, including microplastic extraction, FTIR analysis, GIS mapping, and statistical computing with R. He actively participates in international training programs and conferences, and has presented research on antimicrobial activity of marine organisms and microplastic pollution.
