Biography
Farhana Bintay Hye is a dedicated academic and emerging environmental researcher currently serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, Bangladesh. She earned both her B.Sc. (2015) and M.Sc. (2017) degrees in Forestry from SUST, graduating with distinction (CGPAs of 3.70 and 3.97, respectively), and receiving multiple academic awards, including UGC Merit and University Merit Scholarships.
Her research interests converge on sustainable land use, soil restoration, and climate-resilient agriculture, with a particular focus on the application of biochar technologies to improve soil fertility, mitigate arsenic contamination, and enhance crop performance in tropical agroecosystems. Ms. Hye has led and contributed to numerous research projects as Principal and Co-Investigator, including collaborations with international faculty such as Dr. Nigel Gale from the University of Guelph. Her published works include peer-reviewed articles on the impact of biochar on Oryza sativa and soil nutrient dynamics, and a conservation-focused study on the endangered Black Soft-Shell Turtle (Nilssonia nigricans).
In parallel to her academic pursuits, she has accrued over four years of field and technical experience in Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL), data systems, and program quality assurance across interdisciplinary development sectors—ranging from public health and nutrition to climate resilience and community livelihoods. Her tenure with Save the Children International and Friends in Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB) highlights her proficiency in managing MIS platforms, conducting data quality assessments, designing digital survey tools (ODK/KoboCollect), and facilitating capacity-building initiatives for grassroots stakeholders.
Farhana is also a strong advocate for interdisciplinary knowledge exchange. She has actively participated in regional conferences and workshops addressing ICT in development, species conservation, and geospatial technologies. Her academic engagements are complemented by her experience as a research assistant at the SUST Research Centre and her field internship with the Bangladesh Forest Department, where she gained hands-on exposure to forest management and afforestation programs.
Equipped with robust analytical skills, proficiency in GIS and statistical tools (R, SPSS, XLSTAT), and a demonstrated ability to integrate research with development practice, Farhana Bintay Hye stands out as a promising scholar committed to addressing ecological challenges and contributing to evidence-based policy and practice in environmental science.
