Dr. Md. Jamal Uddin was born in Cumilla, Bangladesh, and is currently working as a Professor (Grade-2) in the Department of Statistics at Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST), Sylhet-3114, Bangladesh. He obtained his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) with First Division from Bipulasar Ahmmed Ullah High School, Bipulasar, Monoharganj, Cumilla, Bangladesh, in 1994. He then completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) with First Division from Cumilla Govt College, Cumilla, Bangladesh, in 1996. From November 1998 to December 2003, he pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Statistics at SUST, and from January 2004 to August 2005, he completed a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Statistics with a thesis at the same university. In both programs, he secured the first position. From October 2008 to September 2010, he also studied Biostatistics programme with a VLIR-UOS scholarship at the Center for Statistics, Hasselt University, Belgium. Moreover, from January 2011 to December 2014, he was a PhD candidate in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology at Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. His PhD thesis focused on statistical methods to control for unmeasured confounding in pharmacoepidemiology. Furthermore, from April 2017 to December 2019, he worked as a Postdoctoral fellow in the Section of Biostatistics, Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Concurrently, he served as a Statistician in the Department of Mental Health, University Hospital Copenhagen, Denmark, under the iPSYCH project (The Lundbeck Foundation Initiative for Integrative Psychiatric Research). He began his academic career in August 2005 as a junior Lecturer in the Department of BBA at IIUC, Dhaka Campus. In February 2006, he joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at SUST, and in August 2018, he was promoted to Professor.
Dr Uddin’s current research interest is to develop/assess statistical methods in the area of public health and epidemiology and to focus on the causal inference using observational study, genetics, and complex survey data. His research also focuses on public health challenges such as noncommunicable diseases (e.g., diabetes and cardiovascular disease), maternal and child health, and mental health. He has published 87 scientific articles (72 indexed in Scopus) in renowned national and international journals and has participated in numerous conferences worldwide. Moreover, he received the Vice Chancellor Award from SUST and the Andrew McAfee Award for the best abstract submitted by a researcher from a developing country at the 32nd ICPE in Dublin, Ireland (2016). During his PhD and postdoctoral work in the Netherlands and Denmark, he contributed to several multidisciplinary international research projects as a statistician. His career has taken him to over 30 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several EU nations. As a principal investigator, he has secured 8 research grants from institutions such as SUST, the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. As a co-principal investigator, he received a research grant from icddr,b under the GOB research grant. Dr. Uddin has supervised 3 PhD students, 8 MSc thesis students, and 45 BSc/MSc research students at SUST. He has also served as a lead consultant and/or data analyst for various national development projects conducted by organizations such as BRAC, Save the Children, IFRC, CARE, the Asia Foundation, and The Hunger Project. Currently, he leads the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Public Health Research Team and is actively involved in several national and international collaborative research initiatives. Research Interests

  • Dr. Uddin's primary research interests include developing and evaluating statistical methods for causal inference using experimental and observational healthcare databases. Additionally, he focuses on addressing public health challenges in Bangladesh, including noncommunicable diseases (e.g., diabetes and cardiovascular disease), maternal and child health, E-health innovations, and mental health. Through his research, he aims to generate evidence-based solutions that influence policy and practice, ultimately improving population health outcomes.
