Welcome from the Department of Social Work!
The department of Social Work started the journey for preparing skilled social workers in 1993. The mission of this department to produce skilled social work professionals through providing scientific knowledge on social problems and their solutions for the improvement of social conditions of the country and promoting social justice and human dignity for all people. Currently the Department of Social Work has both graduate and undergraduate programs. Undergraduate program is called Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) in Social Work which has 5 batches with 303 students. Graduate program comprises with three independent programs namely Master of Social Sciences (MSS) in Social Work, Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Social Work. The BSS curriculum in Social Work program is comprised with 143 credit hours spanned in 8th semesters. The curriculum covers courses on history and philosophy of social work education, methods and techniques of social work, , social research, urban and rural community development, public health, Psychology and human behavior, physiology, human rights and social justice, disaster management, disabilities issues, demography and population policies. The MSS in Social Work program is designed for 2 semesters for general and 3 semesters for thesis students. MSS program offers courses including advanced social research, international social work, human rights, clinical social work, child and family welfare, labor relations, and Geriatric welfare. Both of the programs require internship for 1 full semester. Students are placed in different development organizations to use social work in practical settings.
The department has collaboration with both national and international academic and professional organizations. Winona State University and Monmouth University, USA is linked with the department as academic partners and already hosted seminars and workshops with joint efforts. Faculties from the three institutions are exchanged and now students exchange program is started. Two MSW students of Monmouth University had completed their internship program under this MoU. The department has MoU with American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS), Unicef, Save the Children and Ukbet. Seminars and workshops are organized regularly with joint collaboration under these agreements.
The alumni of our department are serving with various government and non-government organizations. Many are working as volunteers in different community based organizations, like, Red Crescent Society, Transparency International. Our graduates are serving in the field of community development across Bangladesh. A good number of graduates have pursued their higher studies from many internationally reputed universities across the world and serving in the respective communities.
The department is committed to promote social justice and ensure community development through relentless efforts by the experienced and qualified faculty members and graduates.
