The Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering (PME) at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was established in 2004 and began its academic activities on July 1, 2005. It launched the first undergraduate program in petroleum and mining engineering in Bangladesh, playing a pioneering role in meeting the needs of the country's growing energy and mineral sectors. The department awarded its first B.Sc. (Engineering) degree in Petroleum and Mining Engineering in 2010, marking a historic milestone for engineering education in the country. The department is strategically located in Sylhet, within the Surma Basin, the only petroliferous basin in Bangladesh, which holds significant natural gas reserves and other mineral resources. This geographical advantage provides a unique learning environment for students and fosters research opportunities directly related to Bangladesh's energy and mineral resources sectors. Vision: The Department aims to produce top-notch Petroleum and Mining Engineers who will contribute to the development of the energy and mineral resources sectors at both national and international levels. Mission: The Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering strives to: M1: Provide a student-centered, high-quality teaching and learning environment that promotes the intellectual, personal, and professional development of students. M2: Conduct research that generates, communicates, and applies new knowledge for the betterment of society. M3: Prepare students to contribute as engineering professionals in industry, government, and academia. By leveraging its strategic location and focusing on academic excellence, the department is committed to shaping the next generation of engineers to address the challenges of the energy and mining industries, with a special focus on sustainable development, innovation, and national economic growth.
