Biography

Dr. Md. Shamsul Haque Prodhan is a plant biotechnologist, with PhD in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology from Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. Currently working as a professor in the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh. He completed his postdoctoral research at the University of Tsukuba and Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences in Japan. Mr. Prodhan graduated (B.Sc. Ag. Honors) from India and completed SSC, HSC from Pabna Cadet College. He served as former Head of the department of GEB, Dean school of Life Sciences and Syndicate member of SUST. Dr. Prodhan received different national and international awards for his brilliant academic results and research achievements (Best cadet award from PCC, ICCR award from Indian government, Monbusho award from Japan government, VC award from SUST, JSPS-UGC research grant, USDA research grant). He also acted as a team leader of COVID-19 detection team in the last COVID-19 pandemic situation. As of 2023, Dr. Prodhan has authored over 75 peer-reviewed research articles, many expert reviews, and more than 65 conference proceedings. He participated different national and international seminar, workshop and conferences also given invited talk in different universities and institutions. He is affiliated with different scientific societies in home and abroad. Mr. Prodhan is supervising several MS, PhD and post-doctoral fellows. Currently he is conducting research to develop disease free crop through tissue culture and abiotic stress resistant rice through genetic engineering and Genome editing approaches to feed the increasing population of the world, especially in the context of low and lower-middle-income countries, like Bangladesh.

Graduate Supervision

  • 1. Post Doctoral: One post doctoral fellow under the support of Bangabandhu fellowship PhD: One PhD fellow has completed thesis under the title of " Development of salt and submergence tolerant rice through genetic engineering approach". Two PhD fellows are doing their thesis work.
  • 2. MS: MS thesis students as well as under graduate research students.
  • 3. Already more than twenty MS students completed MS theses under the supervision of him. Mr. Prodhan is also co-super visor and reviewer of MS theses of other universities in Bangladesh.
