With the support of International Training Network (ITN) under Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), for the first time, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet has organized a 2-day (26-27 August 2022) Orientation Workshop for the university students on Fecal Sludge Management in Cities: An Element of City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation. The workshop venue was in the Department of Civil Engineering (CE), Sylhet Engineering College (SEC) which is affiliated with SUST.
From SUST, 18 students from the Department of Geography and Environment, and 7 students of the Department of CEE attended the workshop along with 7 students of the Department of CE, SEC. For these 32 trainees, 4 Master Trainers from the Department of CEE, SUST conducted the workshop where two case studies were presented by other professionals.
To meet the SDG, the demand of safely managed sanitation system is increasing. Social inclusion is highly required here for sustainable solution. Therefore, a requirement of capacity building program is highly expected. For this, this workshop has been introduced to the university students who will lead the whole country.
Prof. Dr. Md. Imran Kabir from the Department of CEE, SUST was the focal person of CEE-SUST and ITN-BUET collaboration program. He hosted the inauguration and closing ceremony of the workshop. In the inauguration ceremony, the Head of the Department of CE, SEC along with the Principal of SEC were present who welcome all the students and appreciate that SUST has selected this venue. The Honorable Principal, SEC mentioned that the intention of the Father of the Nation was to create the skilled manpower. To do so, there is no alternative rather than training or workshop as supported by the Head of the Department of CE, SEC.
After setting 4 different groups blending with different students of various institutes, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Azizul Hoque, Department of CEE started to explaining the overall scenario and analyze the Context. Thereafter, the focal person of this workshop, Prof. Dr. Imran discussed with the trainees about the stakeholders who have interest and influence to introduce the fecal sludge management. Later, Prof. Dr. Bijit Kumar Banik started with the importance of enabling environment. These 3 trainers explained relevant topics with plenty of groups works among the attendees on the first day. Day 2 was selected for the field works and case study sharing. Engr. Md. Riazul Islam, WASH Officer, UNICEF shared the existing FSM and FSTP facilities in the Rohingya camp whereas Engr. Muhammed Atiqul Hasan shared his one of the research outputs related to Ward-9, Sylhet City Corporation regarding Shit Flow Diagram (SFD). After the lively presentations on the Field works of the groups, the certificates for the trainees have been disbursed by the Guest of Honors who were present in the closing ceremony.
