Biography

Dr Mostafa Kamal Masud joins Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet-3114, Bangladesh as a Lecturer at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in April 2013 and has been promoted as an Assistant professor on April 2015. He completed his B.Sc. and M.S. from the Department of Chemistry, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh in the year of 2009 and 2011 respectively. He obtained his PhD (major in Medical Biotechnology, Diagnosis and Nanobiotechnology) from Australian Institute for Bioengineering (AIBN), the University of Queensland (UQ) (stands 47th in the world QS World University Rankings), Brisbane, Australia in the year of 2020.

He considers himself as an emergent research leader with research capability in the field of medical technology and personalised diagnostics in Australia. His research is dedicated to the development of novel nanostructures and nano-diagnostic technologies to solve key problems in the area of medical diagnostics and treatment monitoring. As an early career researcher, he has demonstrated an exceptional track record (relative to opportunity) with 35 peer-review publications (Scopus/ Web of Science Indexed). Most of his research articles has been published in prestigious and high impact journals in the field including ACS Nano, Small, Analytical Chemistry, Biosensor and Bioelectronics, Science Advances, Nanoscale, Chemical Communication, Journal of Material Chemistry B, etc. He also contributed to two important critical perspectives on the scopes, gaps, and needs of the current medical diagnostics field which were published in Chemical Society Review and Trends in Biochemical Sciences journals. He has developed several novel readout strategies for autoantibody, miRNA and DNA methylation biomarker detection from clinical samples. These strategies are found to be simple, accurate, and portable, enabling rapid diagnosis of disease biomarkers using minimal equipment.

He has received several awards including; highly prestigious "Dean's Award for Outstanding Higher Degree by Research Theses 2020" by the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia; prestigious JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2020) from Japan, Postgraduate Research Award (2018-2019) from AINSE Limited,’ Sydney; first Prize for Outstanding Poster from AINSE/ANBUG Neutron Scattering Symposium 2018, Sydney; Analytical Methods Poster Prize from 21st Australia and Newzealand Electrochemistry Symposium 2019, Brisbane, Australia. He has demonstrated the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multi-institutional teams from local and international institutes and has been affiliated as Visiting Scholar at Griffith University, Australia and Honorary Fellow at Australian Institute for Bioengineering (AIBN), the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia.

Dr Masud’s major teaching interests include Biophysical Chemistry, Enzymology, Organic Reaction Mechanism, Metabolism and Chemistry of Natural Products. His main research focuses on the design and translation of bio-favourable engineered nanostructured superparamagnetic materials towards the development of molecular diagnostics (optical and electrochemical nanobiosensors, magnetophoretic-based and paper-based microfluidic devices) for disease detection.
